Genome Medicine, a new online journal being developed by the open access publisher BioMed Central, is seeking an enthusiastic, well-organised, literate PhD or MD (or equivalent post-graduate) to join its expanding editorial team as an Assistant Editor.

Genome Medicine, the premier medical journal of BioMed Central and the sister journal to Genome Biology, will publish reviews, commentaries and original research articles of outstanding quality aimed at keeping physicians, clinical researchers and basic scientists informed of advances in medicine, as influenced by genomics and other large-scale or high-throughput approaches.

The successful candidate will, together with other members of the editorial team, identify research articles suitable for Genome Medicine’s scope and interest level and make decisions on publication on the basis of referees' advice. Additional responsibilities of the team include the commissioning of reviews, meeting reports and comments, advocacy to authors, scientific conference attendance, as well as liaising with the editorial team that is responsible for peer-review of manuscripts for a wide range of biological and clinical research journals, including BMC Medical Genomics and BMC Cancer.   • Performing checks on full text versions of articles, to ensure they match the journal's format
  • Corresponding with authors to resolve any difficulties they might have in carrying out formatting changes requested, and responding to general enquiries about the final publication process
  • Making corrections to XML and figure files where they deviate from the journal's format
  • Editing equations in GIF, EPS and MathML format
  • Sending articles to our XML markup company in India
  • Loading of article XML to our database, including troubleshooting where there are problems
  • Posting new articles onto the websites
  • Processing XML markup invoices and liaising with the Accounts Department to ensure payment
  • Producing daily reports on performance to the Production Controller
  • Providing holiday/sickness cover and supporting the team in their duties

The key task is to provide a high quality and objective peer review service through liaison with reviewers, editorial boards and authors. Staff also represent the journals at conferences and editorial board meetings. A life science or clinical research degree and postgraduate experience in a relevant subject are both required. Job description

Assistant Editors are responsible for the peer review process on the journals they work on, assessing the manuscript upon submission, selecting and inviting peer reviewers, corresponding with the authors and reviewers, and making decisions on manuscripts on the basis of the peer reviewers' reports. Assistant Editors also suggest manuscripts to be highlighted as Research Highlights and to be press released.

Manuscripts

  • Process approximately as many manuscripts as you receive over each two-week period.
  • Assess each manuscript on receipt, and chose and invite experts to peer review.
  • Answer author queries in a timely fashion, using standard letters where possible.
  • Make decisions on manuscripts, seeking further advice when required.
  • Fast track manuscripts as required.
  • Suggest articles for press release based on reviewers' reports and co-ordinate timely press releases as required.
  • Suggest and write blurbs as required.
  • Suggest improvements to systems, websites, and to the manuscript process.

Additional tasks

  • Carry out agreed additional tasks and responsibilities - e.g. journal policies, updating instructions for authors, marketing, attending conferences - and provide feedback on projects to the Senior Editor

We are looking for Associate Editors to join the Conference Reporting Group who will be responsible for commissioning conference reports in the field of biochemistry with relevance to disease and drug discovery. The role will then involve editing these manuscripts to conform with our strict structure as well as checking for scientific accuracy and sense. You may also be involved in writing up reports of conference slides in conjunction with the speakers. These roles will involve close liaison with editorial colleagues as well as with scientific experts across a wide breadth of protein fields. You will need to have a postgraduate qualification (MSc or equivalent) in either biochemistry or molecular biology and will need to show an ability to apply your scientific knowledge and understanding to areas outside of your areas of expertise.
