About the Collection

BMC Ophthalmology is calling for submissions to our Collection on Complex keratoplasty. Complex keratoplasty refers to advanced corneal transplant procedures designed to replace damaged or diseased corneal tissue with healthy donor tissue, aiming to restore vision and improve corneal function. Procedures like penetrating keratoplasty, deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK), Descemet stripping automated endothelial keratoplasty (DSAEK), Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK), and keratoprosthetics often result in varied surgical outcomes, graft rejection, and postoperative care complexities.

The aim of this Collection is to explore the surgical techniques used in complex keratoplasty procedures, discuss the challenges in implementing these techniques, highlight their clinical outcomes, and present new insights into therapeutic approaches. Therefore, this Collection welcomes research articles that include, but are not limited to, the following topics:

  • Surgical techniques in complex keratoplasty, including suture methods and graft preparation
  • Advances in immunomodulatory therapies to prevent graft rejection
  • Imaging modalities for early detection and monitoring of graft health
  • Long-term outcomes and quality of life considerations for patients undergoing complex keratoplasty.
