About the Collection

Water scarcity and pollution are critical challenges faced by many regions around the world. Concurrently, the generation of waste resources, if managed improperly, can exacerbate environmental degradation. This special issue will explore the integration of biotechnological solutions to address these pressing issues, highlighting sustainable methods and novel technologies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Advanced Biological Water Treatment Methods

  • Bioreactors and biofilm processes
  • Microbial fuel cells for wastewater treatment
  • Enzymatic degradation of pollutants
  • Microalgae based wastewater treatment

Innovative Biotechnologies for Water Purification

  • Advanced Microbial wastewater treatment
  • Genetic engineering of microorganisms for pollutant degradation
  • Phytoremediation and aquatic plant-based treatment systems
  • Biosorption and bioaccumulation techniques

Waste Resource Utilization

  • Conversion of waste to energy (bioenergy)
  • Recovery of valuable resources from waste
  • Advanced heavy metal recovery
  • Biotechnological recycling methods

Integrated Approaches

  • Holistic systems combining water treatment and waste utilization
  • Lifecycle assessment of biotechnological processes
  • Policy and economic considerations for implementation

Jikai Zhao, PhD,  University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, United States of America

Dr. Jikai Zhao is an assistant professor in the School of Earth, Environmental, and Marine Sciences at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. Dr. Zhao received a Ph.D. degree in biological and agricultural engineering from Kansas State University in May 2022. After that, Dr. Zhao became a postdoctoral associate in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison under the supervision of Prof. George W. Huber. His research group uses thermochemical catalysis and biological processes to upgrade agricultural, food, and plastic waste into biofuels, chemicals, and materials. In addition, Dr. Zhao applies technoeconomic analysis and life-cycle assessment to evaluate the economic feasibility and environmental impacts of the proposed refinery.

Alok Patel, PhD, Luleå University of Technology, Sweden

Dr. Alok Patel is currently an Assistant Professor in Biochemical Process Engineering at the Department of Civil, Environmental and Natural Resources Engineering (SBN) at Luleå University of Technology (LTU), Sweden. His remarkable journey in the realm of bioprocess engineering began with the successful completion of his PhD at the Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering at IIT Roorkee, India, in 2017. A visionary in the field, Dr. Patel embarked on an independent research career within the Biochemical Process Engineering (BPE) group at LTU, Sweden. Dr. Patel's leadership extends to spearheading the microalgal-based biorefinery in his division and assuming the role of principal investigator in research grants funded by the Swedish Research Council Formas, Sweden. He is also a co-principal investigator in several other projects funded by prestigious institutions like EU Horizon and various national agencies. His dedication to fostering global collaboration is evident through his mentorship of various interns, facilitating their growth through programs like ERASMUS and IAESTE, all while actively promoting international internships. Dr. Patel's academic expertise is reflected in his publication record, which boasts over 90 articles and three edited books. He further contributes to the academic community as an Associate Editor and esteemed editorial board member for several peer-reviewed journals, including BMC Biotechnology.
