About the Collection

BMC Endocrine Disorders is calling for submissions to our Collection on Endocrinology of obesity.

Obesity has become a global health concern, with its prevalence reaching alarming levels in many parts of the world. The endocrinology of obesity encompasses the intricate interplay of hormones, metabolism, and adipose tissue function, shedding light on the physiological mechanisms underlying this complex condition. Understanding the endocrine factors contributing to obesity is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies, as well as for addressing the associated comorbidities.

Research on the endocrinology of obesity is crucial for combating the multifaceted challenges posed by this condition. Significant progress has been made in elucidating the role of adipokines, gut hormones, and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis in regulating energy balance and body weight. Moreover, research has highlighted the impact of genetic, environmental, and behavioral factors on endocrine function and obesity risk. Bariatric and metabolic surgery is a pivotal aspect of treatment of patients with obesity and therefore understanding the endocrinology and physiology of obesity. Continual exploration in this field is vital for identifying novel therapeutic targets, refining personalized interventions, and addressing the global burden of obesity-related diseases.

Topics that are welcome include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Role of adipokines in obesity
  • Gut hormones and energy balance
  • Genetic and environmental factors influencing endocrine function in obesity
  • Personalized interventions for obesity management
  • Insights from bariatric and metabolic surgery on the endocrinology of obesity
