Saurabh Shukla, PhD, Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, University of Catania, Italy

Dr Saurabh Shukla is currently working as a Postdoctoral Researcher at University of Catania, Catania, Italy. He has also worked as Senior Project Associate at CSIR-Indian Institute of Toxicology Research, India, after gaining experience as a Postdoctoral Fellow at University of Palermo, Italy. His research interests include monitoring of surface and ground water resources with emphasis on novel techniques of remediation through inclusion of nanotechnology. He is also involved in development of suitable methods of solid waste management and resource recovery. He is serving Environment, Development and Sustainability as an Associate Editor, and engaged as Guest Editor and reviewer with many reputed journals.

About the Collection

BMC Environmental Science is calling for submissions to our Collection on upcycling. This process presents a promising approach to reduce waste, conserve resources, and minimize environmental impact. Important strides have been made in developing upcycling techniques for various materials, such as plastics, textiles, and electronic waste. Additionally, research has highlighted the potential of upcycling in promoting circular economy principles and reducing the reliance on virgin resources. Continued research in this field holds the potential for significant advances, including the development of advanced upcycling technologies, the integration of upcycling into industrial processes, and the exploration of upcycling's role in mitigating climate change.

This Collection aims to explore the diverse facets of upcycling, including its environmental benefits, technological innovations, economic implications, and societal relevance. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

  • Improving the physical and chemical properties of upcycled materials to match or exceed those of virgin materials
  • Chemical treatments and additives in enhancing the durability, flexibility, and other properties of upcycled products
  • Life cycle assessments (LCA)
  • Improved energy requirements for upcycling processes 
  • Biodegradable polymers and biotechnology
  • Mechanical properties and testing
  • Automation and robotics in upcycling
  • Environmental impact and waste reduction
  • Economic viability and market trends
  • Innovative fabrication techniques
